The Lady Spartans’ 2020 volleyball season has begun and these ladies have already met several challenges in terms of practices and games. There are many new changes to address when playing either at home or at away games this season.

However, all players are ready and willing to do what it takes to be able to play on the court this year!

Many of the varsity players had high anticipation for their first game! After coming from a successful season last year and having to say goodbye to four seniors, the team was nervous for the outcome of the first game. “I think we were all a little stressed because we wanted to show that we are still strong, and we still have a lot to give. This team has a lot of talent, and I am excited for everyone to get to see it. A lot of us are taking on new and bigger roles, so it was a bit nerve-wracking for us all,” mentioned Peyton Janeway, junior varsity player.

Emily Shumaker, also a junior and returning varsity player, felt the same but was still excited to get on the court. When asked about how she felt with the new guidelines, Emily stated, “I didn’t think it was too bad, I usually just tune out everything but my coach when I play. The mask was tight, but I didn’t have to wear it too much. I did notice during the timeouts that the crowd almost seems more supportive than they used to be.”

This past Tuesday September 1st, The Baker Lady Spartans faced the Bowman Lady Bulldogs. The Spartans came out on top with the win, sweeping the Bulldogs in three quick sets. The three senior players this year are Sady Harbaugh, Macy Varner, and Mya Hadley. Juniors are Peyton Janeway, Emily Shumaker, and Rilee Pettersen as the new varsity setter. The team had a few unfortunate rotation mistakes and net violations, but it was all part of the first game jitters. The Spartans will continue to grow and improve this year, both individually and as a team. These girls are more than ready for their upcoming season, and are eager to face all the challenges that will come with smiles and positivity behind those masks!
