Mrs. Benner’s third grade class has been learning about making observations. To learn more about observations, the students traveled to Mrs. Schumacher’s biology class to learn about how to make qualitative and quantitative measurements. Before they began, the students watched a short video on what an owl pellet is and went over safety precautions. Third graders were also tasked with identifying the parts of a vole’s skeleton, since this is what they would hopefully find in their pellets. After measuring the length, width, and mass of their pellets, third grade students were given probes and tweezers to explore the components of the pellet. Beneath all of the fur and hair, students were able to find skulls, fore limbs, vertebrates, and even the scapula of the owl’s last meal. Third graders placed any bones they found in a petri dish that Mrs. Schumacher and the biology students would help clean off with hydrogen peroxide. The third grade class had a blast learning about owl pellets and getting to “act like scientists”.
