Jessica Criss made the journey to Plevna on Wednesday, November 11th. Ms. Criss is a 2019 MSU graduate in Equestrian Science and won the 70th Miss Montana Pageant! She presently teaches beginning English Equitation and is a dance teacher in the MSU country swing dance club, as well as a youth representative on the 4-H executive council. She plans to pursue a masters’ degree in speech pathology and operate a therapeutic riding facility. For the talent portion of the competition, she performed a classic operatic vocal.
A black belt Ju-jitsu herself, Jessica was excited to show Mrs. Phelp’s P.E. classes some moves, which supports her platform of “A Sense of Defense: Developing Awareness and Safety to Eradicate Bullying”. Jessica began her presentation with a summary describing Martial Arts. This led into the students taking a pledge and signing their names on the dotted line, agreeing to use their upcoming skills positively. Following these formalities, Jessica warmed the kids up and then taught them two ready positions; horse and fighter. Next, they covered two defense moves, with their arms, and then two kicks; which consisted of a side-step kick and crane kick. The students practiced these moves alone, and then were delighted to practice kicking matts. The students enjoyed Jessica’s quick and calculated moves, and are now ready to tackle the rest of the week, Ju-jitsu style!
