Mrs. Schumacher’s sophomore biology class has been studying the four major macromolecules in all living organisms: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic Acids. After learning about the jobs of these different molecules, the students were given the opportunity to test stomach contents. In the lab, the students were told that after an autopsy it had appeared that the victim had eaten before his death. Students used Sudan Red III, Benedict’s Solution, Biuret Solution, and Iodine to test whether Lipids, Simple Carbohydrates, Proteins, or Complex Carbohydrates were in the stomach contents. From there on, the students had to take their test results and determine where and what the victim ate before his death. The Sophomores had a blast learning about all the different ways to test for the major macromolecules.
