Baker’s girls track team finished fourth in the regional track invitational hosted by Bowman April 1.

The Spartans finished fourth in team scoring with 69 points behind host Bowman County (122), Mott-Regent/New England (108) and Killdeer (91).

The Lady Spartans beat Hazen (62), Richardton-Taylor (52), Hettinger-Scranton (51) and Grant County/Flasher (42) in the field of 12 teams.

The visiting Spartans had two winners. Emily Shumaker easily won the javelin by throwing 112 feet. That was about 14 feet further that her nearest competition.

It was Peyton Janeway picking up the other win in the triple jump with a 34-11 effort.

The Spartans were led by Ashlyn Lutts in the sprints, with the junior placing second in the 100 meters with a time of 13:45, a personal record. Emilia Cuppy placed seventh in the event with a time of 13.92 seconds.

In the 200 meters, it was Saraya Afrank taking second with a personal best of 28.71 seconds, while Cuppy placed eighth (29.89 seconds).

Cuppy was the top Baker finisher in the 400 meters, placing eighth with a time of 1:12.71 for the event.

Lutts picked up another second place in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:36.25, she finished two seconds behind the winner from Hettinger-Scranton – Sidra Sadowsky.

In the shot put, Makenna Griffith placed ninth, throwing 27 feet, four inches. Gabriella Qualley took 20th place with a distance of 23-11, while Mallory Varner threw 21-7 to place 26th in the competition.

In the discus, Griffith placed seventh with a personal best effort of 93-5.  Emily Shmaker placed 13th for Baker in the event with a 74-11 throw and Qualley finished 17th with a 72-9 toss. Varner had a 57-03 toss to take 26th place.

In the javelin, behind Shumaker’s winning effort, the Spartans had Griffith take seventh with a 80-6 throw and Qualley (ninth, 71-03) joining Varner (12th, 68-0) among the top dozen.

In the long jump, Janeway finished second with a 16-3 effort, while Afrank was fifth with a 15-6 distance. Sophomore Faith Hansen finished 19th with a distance of 12-10.


The Cougars had Dacy Buerkle take 12th with a personal best of 14.53 seconds in the 100 meters. She also placed 17th in the 200 meters with a time of 31.98 seconds. Sophia Schumacher was 22nd with a time of 32.89 seconds.

In the 400 meters, it was Schumacher (10th, 1:14.88) and Buerkle (11th, 1:15.59) finishing.

Schumacher also placed 28th in the shot put with a throw of 20-1 and 23rd in the discus with a 60-1 effort.

Buerkle was 34th with a 52-10 throw in the discus.
