The 7th annual Baker High School Science Fair will be mostly virtual this year, due to COVID-19.

It will take place on Jan. 22, 2021 in Mrs. Rost’s classroom.

Students are conducting experiments as normal, but are preparing online slide shows along with their research papers, instead of traditional science fair boards. They will be web conferencing with their judges and presenting their projects with a shared screen.

They will also prepare posters on the computer, which will be printed, or created traditional boards if they choose. These will be displayed in the hallway with awards posted later.

Students will be judged in the following three categories based on the topics they chose: Human Biology and Psychology, Biology and Physical Science.

Judges will include Alison Enos, Shanny Spang Gion, Jay Rost, Kodie Olsen, Roy Rost and Dr. William MacKay. Some of the unique project topics include testing air flow around different types of windbreaks, testing taste response of people who have and have not had COVID-19, investigating the molecular structure and function of SARS-CoV-2 mutations and determining if white noise affects brine shrimp hatching.

Classes from Lincoln, Longfellow and the Junior High usually come to look at projects and student presentations. This year, those classes are invited to join the web conference and watch the student presentations while they are being judged. While students enjoy the process of choosing and conducting their experiments, many do prefer making traditional science fair boards and would prefer a normal science fair. Hopefully, next year we will be able to return to normal.
