A 32-year old kidnap-murder case is drawing attention to Baker, again.

In 1987, Marty Etchemendy of Miles City was kidnapped, robbed and murdered.

Vernon Kills On Top, now in his 60s, was convicted of kidnapping and murder in the case which had been moved to Baker in a change of venue. His brother, Lester Kills On Top, and co-defendant Diane Bull Coming were also convicted in the trial.

Originally sentenced to death, that sentence was eventually overturned by the Montana Supreme Court for Vernon Kills On Top.

In the summer of 2019, the Montana Supreme Court made news again when it struck down the kidnapping charge saying it was double jeopardy and claimed that the facts used in the homicide charge were also used in the kidnapping charge.

Recently, a production company reportedly visited the Fallon County Courthouse for a documentary which is planned for release in the summer.
