My name is Kennedy Lyson, and I am a 2019-2020 NILE Merit Heifer recipient. The NILE Merit Heifer program rewards youth with a heifer and a good base of knowledge to get your own cattle herd started.

Last year in June I applied for this live animal scholarship. In September I received a letter from the NILE stating that I had been selected to be a part of this program.

Many people do not know about the awesome opportunity that this program gives you. I would like to explain the program and hopefully get more youth participating.

In October I went to the NILE stock show and rodeo, to meet my donors and picked out my heifer. Then in November I went to pick her up.

In January we started having monthly reports and conference calls. Each month we have a report that asks questions from whatever we were learning about that month, nutrition, halter breaking, breeding and more. You answer the questions and fill out the excel spreadsheet of all of the costs through the month pertaining to your heifer.

Although it may seem like a lot of work, the knowledge and the good habit of record keeping that these reports gives you really helps you in real life.

I am so excited to be in this program! I would encourage all youth to get involved! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or the Fallon/Carter Extension Office.
