October 23-31, was Red Ribbon Week. Mrs. Phelps celebrated this week with her eighth grade class as they learned about making healthy choices. The slogan for this year is – Send a Message. Stay Drug Free. Wednesday, October 30, the eighth grade class wore red shirts in support of Red Ribbon Week. Each student’s shirt had a number which represented a fact about drugs, alcohol or tobacco. They also made informational posters and t-shirts to hang on the wall.
Noah McLachlan wore the number 70 – There are 70 cancer-causing chemicals in cigarettes. Tylee Rieger sported the number 1 – 1 billion people smoke cigarettes. Whitney Thielen had the number 5 – one in five people die of smoking. Sophia Schumacher displayed the number 21 – 21 million people have at least one addiction. Carson Sander showed the number 10 – Smokers die ten years younger than nonsmokers do. Wyatt Thielen carried the number 3 – The amount of deaths from smoking has tripled since 1990. Thank you eighth grade for sharing your Red Ribbon Facts with the students at Plevna School.
