This fall the O’Fallon Historical Museum is partnering with the Montana Preservation Alliance to complete the Big Sky Schoolhouse Survey in Fallon County. This project is a comprehensive statewide architectural survey of Montana’s one and two-room schoolhouses that seeks to locate and document the remaining schoolhouses in every county under the Big Sky.With assistance from student interns and volunteers, MPA has completed survey work in about half of Montana’s 56 counties. Their long-term goal is to provide technical assistance to endangered schoolhouses with notable historic integrity. Additionally, the research will be collected into a database, usable for future studies and preservation work. So far we have documented or are planning to document these country schools in Fallon County: Willard, Scole, Chimney Creek, Prairie Rose, Long, Hillside, O’Donnell and Hidden Water.
If you know of any country schools that are still standing that we have missed, please contact the museum at 406-778-3265 or firstname.lastname@example.org so we can add them to our list. Feel free to stop by with any information you may have. We have moved to our winter hours as of Sept. 1 and are now open Monday through Friday, 9-12 and 1-4. We appreciate your help in preserving our county’s history!
