Last week at the State High School Rodeo, Baker’s own Jacob Wang took home the state championship for Steer Wrestling.
Coming into the State competition, Jacob was ranked first with four other competitors. Jacob, along with the four other competitors he was tied with, came into the first day of competition with 70 points, which is the highest number of points one can have coming into the state competition.
Last Thursday was the first round of steer wrestling, and the sole possession of first place was up for grabs. After completing the first round of competition, Jacob finished with a time of 4.91 seconds, a personal best, and won the first round.
This first-round time set him up perfectly for the second round that took place on Friday. In this round, Jacob would finish second place with a time of 5.25 seconds. After two full rounds of competing, it would all come down to the third and final round.
The next day, last Saturday, Jacob would finish his third round of steer wrestling. His time came in at 5.67 seconds, placing him third in the round. With all three of these times, Jacob Wang would walk away with the state title after the end of the third round.
Because of his performances at the State Rodeo, Jacob earned himself, along with his championship, a belt buckle for having the fastest time on three different steers and a saddle for winning the Steer Wrestling competition.
After winning his event in Montana, Jacob will continue on to compete at the National Competition in Rock Springs, WY in July.
Congratulations and good luck at nationals, Jacob Wang!
