Adeline Dockter, 88

Adeline Dockter, 88, gently passed away after a long, well-lived life in the early hours of May 20, 2019 in Madison, WI. Family and friends were nearby in her final days and hours.

Adeline was the eldest child of Christian and Anna (Granhaug) Sherva. Raised in the tiny railroad town of Ollie, MT, Adeline would quickly begin her life’s adventure.

At age 12, after an elementary education in Ollie’s one-room schoolhouse, she continued school away from home in Baker, MT. It was just 23 miles, but a world away in 1942. She graduated from Baker High School in 1948.

Upon graduation, she moved to Minneapolis, MN for post-high school studies and began working in the offices of the Carter Oil Company in Billings, MT. Little known fact: Adeline went on to become winner of the ‘Miss Carter Oil’ contest, complete with prizes and a glamorous swimsuit photo – a photo that a humble Adeline kept from her children for many decades!

It was a day in church that further set her future in motion. She met Emil, a new pastor in town. They married in 1952. Adeline embraced the role of pastor’s wife at Peace Lutheran Church of Billings, MT, East Side Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls, SD, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bloomer, WI, Faith Lutheran Church of Rosholt, WI, and Otter Creek & Fairview Lutheran Churches of Highland, WI.

She raised four sons with grace and patience. While at Highland, she worked in the Dodgeville school system as a teacher’s assistant, caring for kids that needed extra attention.

Adeline and Emil retired in 1985; moving to a hill-top country home they built in Elk Mound, WI, where Adeline continued her work at the local school. They retired again in 1993. This time in sunny Surprise, AZ. There, Adeline gave her time to nearby schools and also became an active quilter, making blankets to send overseas to those in need of comfort.

She is survived by sons Michael (Stephanie), Daniel (Lauren), James (Kris), and Gregory (Becky), grandchildren Colin & Sydney (of Daniel), and Noah, Sarah & Jake (of Gregory). In our memories, but no longer with us are her husband Emil, sister Venita (Robert) Irion, and parents Anna and Christian Sherva.

As a cancer survivor with several conditions that could have brought an early end, Adeline summoned the strength to persevere, taught us to let go of things we cannot change, and live your best day possible.  She will be missed forever.

Visitation is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. memorial service and lunch on Saturday, June 15, at the Chapel at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge Assisted Living, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, WI.
