Baker athletes shine at the Elks Tournament

By Katie Wang

The Baker track team traveled to Glendive on April 27 to compete at the annual Elks track meet. With the weather in the mid forties, it was less than ideal competing weather but the athletes buckled down and were ready to go. The plan for the girls’ team was to have both the 400m relay and the 1600m relay run qualifying times in order to lock in a spot at Kalispell. The 4×1 was first and members Ashlynn Lutts, Katie Wang, Wrenzi Wrzesinski and Anika Ploeger warmed up, it looked like it was going to go swimmingly. As the starting gun fired, freshman Ashlynn Lutts blew from the starting blocks. She smoothly handed off to junior Katie Wang who passed the baton to senior Wrenzi Wrzesinski. Wrenzi gained a substantial lead then handed it over to freshman Anika Ploeger to finish it up. Baker crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 51.51- well below qualifying time.

With the 4×1 qualified, it was up to the 4×4 to run a time faster than a 4:20. As the last event of the day, the pressure was on. Each leg of the relay left everything on the track and crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 4:15.15. The 4×4 included Wrenzi Wrzesinski, freshman Peyton Janeway, junior Macee Hadley and Ashlynn Lutts. We are still not sure if the relays ran faster simply because they love to run or the fact that the only Chick Fil A in Montana is located in Kalispell.

Other results from the meet include the boys’ 4×4 placing fifth with senior Jayden Allen, senior Sean Shelhamer, sophomore Jory Miller and junior Caleb Ploeger running on it. Caleb Ploeger also placed fifth in the 3200m run with a time of 11:07.12. Jayden Allen placed fourth in high jump with a jump of 5-06. On the girls’ side, Katie Wang placed fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 28.65. Anika Ploeger placed fifth in the 3200m run with a run of 13:21.78. Wrenzi Wrzesinski won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.72. Senior Andie Batchelor placed third in javelin with a throw of 111-06. Freshman Emily Shumaker placed fifth in long jump with a jump of 14-06.50.
