On Feb. 7, the two Baker High School wrestlers who had qualified for the state tournament traveled to Billings for some tough competition. Senior Dalton Lecoe and Sophomore Avery Uecker did not have the weekend they had hoped and worked for all season long, as they both lost out on the first day. Dalton wrestled Nathan Schmidt from Eureka in the first round; Dalton lost in the first period by a pin with a score of 2-2. Avery wrestled Nate Cargill, also from Eureka in the first round. Avery was pinned in the first round. In the second round Dalton faced Tabris Correa from Shelby. Dalton won that match with a pin in the 1st period, leaving the score 2-0. Avery wrestled Colten Barsness from Cut Bank in round two; Avery also pinned his opponent in the second period, leaving the score 0-0. In the third round Dalton matched up against Dawson Buckalew from Colstrip. Dalton got pinned in the first period with a score of 2-0; this defeat knocked Dalton out of the tournament. Avery came up against Austin Vanek from Cut Bank in round three; Avery lost in first period by a pin with a score of 2-0; this second loss knocked Avery out of the tournament also. Manager Kenzie Davis stated, “Even though we didn’t do as well as we had hoped we would, it was still a great experience for both of these wrestlers and I’m proud of them.
