Baker Lady Spartans Varsity defeated by Forsyth Dogies

The Baker Spartan basketball teams traveled to Forsyth on Jan. 31. In the Lady Spartans Varsity matchup, the Spartans faced a rough first quarter as they were outscored 14-0. The Spartans didn’t give up though, as they struggled to re-focus and through hard work and determination, they did manage to battle their way onto the scoreboard. Unfortunately, their efforts did not propel them to a win and the game ended 52-37 in favor of the Lady Dogies. Manager Megan Smith commented, “The girls struggled in the beginning but had a comeback after halftime; they worked together as a team. Everyone stood up and did their job.” The Spartans were led in scoring by Anika Ploeger with 11 points and 1 rebound. Other Spartan stats include:

Kelsey Miller with one rebound; Macee Hadley had 5 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound and 1 steal; Shelby Moore finished the night with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals; Peyton Janeway had 1 assist, 5 rebounds and 1 steal; Sady Harbaugh got 2 rebounds; Hope Craft scored 2 points and had 1 steal; Sophia Dulin with 2 rebounds and 1 steal; Emily Shumaker scored 7 points and 4 rebounds; Mya Hadley 4 points, 3 rebounds and 1 deflection.

Lady Spartan JV defeat the Lady Dogies

On Jan. 31, the Spartans traveled to Forsyth to take on the Lady Dogies. The JV game was a tightly contested matchup that saw Baker leading by 3 at halftime, 12-9. In the fourth quarter the Spartans outscored the Dogies by 4, ending the game with a score of 28-21.

The team was led by Emily Shumaker with 6 points, and 5 rebounds, followed closely behind by Peyton Janeway and Ashlyn Lutts with 5 points. Sophia Dulin and Camryn Collins scored 4 points, Anika Ploeger had 3 and Alex Williams 1. Peyton Janeway led with 6 rebounds, Mckenna Griffith had 3 and Collins had 2. Alex Williams had 4 steals, and Peyton Janeway, Mckenna Griffith and Ashlyn Lutts each had 2.

Baker boys varsity Spartans are victorious over Forsyth Dogies

On Jan. 31, the Baker Spartans traveled to Forsyth to take on the Dogies. The varsity game started great for Baker and by the end of the first the Spartans had held the Dogies to just 1 point while scoring 11. The next quarter was a stalemate. Forsyth picked up their offense a little while the Spartan defense struggled. Both teams scored 11 points, making the score at half 22-12. The third quarter showed the Dogies paying for their comeback. The Spartans scored 17 points and held Forsyth to just 8 points for the quarter. In the fourth, Baker closed the game and came out victorious with a final score of 50-28.

The Baker Spartans were led by junior Riley O’Donnell who had 12 points, 1 block, 1 rebound and 2 steals. Following were Jacob Wang with 8 points, 1 assist, 6 rebounds and 1 steal, and Caleb Ploeger with 8 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Colter Peterson had 1 assist and 1 rebound. Riley Schultz had 7 points, 1 assist, 1 block, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Konner Flint had 5 points and Jayden Allen had 1 point, 1 assist, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Teight Madler had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Sean Shelhamer had 3 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Trent Collins had 2 rebounds. Jacob Wang commented, “Every game is a chance to improve individually and as a team. This game was about focusing on doing the little things correctly. It was great to be able to play with all of my teammates and work together to win the game.”

Lady Spartans host the Wolf Point Wolves

On Feb. 1, the Lady Spartans hosted the Wolf Point Wolves in their last home varsity matchup for the season. This night was also Senior Parent’s Night and senior players Kelsey Miller and Andie Batchelor, along with senior managers Megan Smith and Lilly Hanson were honored.

The first quarter was tough for the girls, as Wolf Point outscored them 18 to 5, but the Lady Spartans turned things around quickly in the second quarter and outscored the Wolves 9 to 7. This sent the teams into halftime with the Wolves on top 25 to 14. Wolf Point came back even stronger, outscoring the Spartans 18-10 in the third quarter and 26-6 in the fourth quarter, for a final score of 69-30 in favor of the Wolves.

Senior Kelsey Miller was high point scorer for the Spartans, ending the evening with 8 points. Sophomore Mya Hadley contributed 5 points for her team. The remaining Spartan points came from: Emily Shumaker – 4; Shelby Moore – 4; Sady Harbaugh – 2; Hope Craft – 2; Anika Ploeger – 2; McKenna Griffith – 2; Macee Hadley – 1. Senior Kelsey Miller commented, “I’ve enjoyed playing with these ladies this season and am proud of my commitment to the sport these last four years. I’m looking forward to post-season play.”

JV girls are defeated by the Wolf Point Wolves

On Feb. 1, the Lady Spartan JV basketball team fought the Wolf Point Lady Wolves JV team. The Spartans had a tough start, coming out scoreless in the first period and down 11 points. They battled back in the second quarter and ended the first half with a score of 9-18.  The third quarter was again a struggle for the Lady Spartans, but the fourth quarter saw some great shooting and defense as the Lady Spartans outshot the Lady Wolves by 10 points in that quarter. However, it was too little too late and the Spartans fell 31-37.

Leading scorer was McKenna Griffith with 11 points,  5 rebounds, and 1 steal.  Remaining stats for the game are as follows: Ashlyn Lutts with 3 points, 1 assist, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Alissa Bohle had 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. Alex Williams with 4 rebound and 3 steals. Anika Ploeger with 6 points and 3 rebounds. Peyton Janeway with 2 steals. Emily Shumaker with 5 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal. Sophia Dulin with 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Camryn Collins had 2 points and 3 rebounds.

Baker Spartans fall to the Wolf Point Wolves

On Feb. 1, the Spartans hosted the Wolf Point Wolves. This day was packed for the boys’ games, as they had three full games, C, JV and Varsity, and it was also Senior Night where all seniors were honored. The Spartan Seniors are: Riley Schultz, Colter Peterson, Sean Shelhamer, Jayden Allen, and Senior Managers Maleah Graham, and Hannah Gonsioroski. Tip off was at 7 p.m. and Wolves came out fast and strong against the four senior starters and junior Riley O’Donnell. Despite their best efforts, Baker was outscored in all four quarters, although the Spartans held the Wolves to only a 3 point scoring difference in the fourth quarter.

Sean Shelhamer was the leading scorer for the Spartans, with a total of 10. Great effort was also put forth by Jayden Allen as he led the team in rebounds with 7. Despite these contributions, the Spartans fell 37-70 due to an outstanding performance by the Wolves.

Next, the boys will compete against the Miles City Cowboys again but this time at home on Feb. 5.

Baker JV team falls to the Wolf Point Wolves

Baker hosted the Wolf Point Wolves on Feb. 1, 2019. Friday was also seniors’ night for the players and the managers. As their season draws to a close, the boys only have one home game left before their District Tournament in Colstrip. The JV boys battled against the opposing Wolves, but couldn’t quite get close enough to win.

The game started out with Junior Jacob Wang winning the tip. The teams led a fast-paced game, racing up and down the court. At the end of the first quarter Baker was in the lead by a small margin. By halftime however, the Wolves had gained the lead. After halftime things were looking better with Baker as they returned to the court determined to catch up and they pulled ahead. In the fourth quarter the boys that played on the varsity team were on the bench to save their quarters for the next game. Although the rest of the JV team tried their best and stayed in close range of the Wolves, they were unable to maintain their lead and they ended up losing 48-58.

Jacob Wang led the team in points with 10. He also had 6 rebounds. Garrett Lesh led the team in rebounds with 10. He also had 8 points and 2 steals. Konner Flint also had 8 points and 2 steals, along with 2 assists. Jory Miller had 7 points and 4 steals. Dillon Hickey had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Jaxson Tronstad also had 5 points. Logan Graham had 3 points and 4 rebounds. Ashton Afrank had 2 points.

Spartan boys C-Squad defeats the Wolf Point Wolves

On Feb. 1, the Baker Spartan C-Squad boys competed against the visiting Wolf Point Wolves. Freshman Jaxson Tronstad led the team by snagging 8 rebounds and scoring a total of 15 points for the team. Garrett Lesh came in with a close second to Jaxson Tronstad, having stolen the ball 6 times, grabbing 8 rebounds and scoring a total of 12 points. Sophomore Logan Graham, with 5 points (3 of which came from a 3-pointer), 5 steals, and 5 assists.  Jory Miller had 3 steals, 7 rebounds and scored 8 points. Ashton Afrank also had 3 steals and scored 8 points, while Jonathon Reetz scored 2 points. Aiden Rabbitt nabbed 2 rebounds, had 2 assists and scored 5 points.

Through hard work and strong perseverance, the Spartans pulled off a 55-20 victory against the Wolves for the second win against the Wolves this season. The confidence and abilities this team has been developing is becoming much more evident every game. Freshman Garrett Lesh says that the team, “played really good defense and executed our offense.”
