Speech and Drama competes in Sidney

By Rachel Rost

On Jan. 5, Baker Speech and Drama met tough competition in Sidney against 17 schools. Three Spartans took on the task of out-speaking numerous students in speech events from Class A, B and C schools such as Laurel, Glasgow, Fairview, and Sidney. Dani Rost competed in Memorized Public Address, Jaylynn Hanes competed in Humorous Oral Interpretation, and Zachery Craig competed in Lincoln

Douglas Debate. Zachery’s goal for this meet was to not get last place. He achieved this goal and placed 7th out of 9 competitors. The five drama students that competed all acted their way onto the awards podium. Olivia Gunderson placed 4th in Humorous Solo; Hannah Goerndt placed 3rd in Dramatic Solo; Devon Solberg received 1st place in Humorous Solo; Caleb Rost and Rachel Rost received 1st place in Classical Theater. These fantastic placings earned Baker a 1st place trophy for Class B Drama Sweeps. Coach Austin Waldbillig says, “I’m really proud of the team. They hit the ground running right after the break and everyone is really excited for divisionals.”
