Spartan Boys Basketball vs. Ekalaka Bulldogs

On Dec. 11, the Baker Spartans hosted the Ekalaka Bulldogs in a double header matchup. The score was close for the whole game, though Ekalaka did lead for most of the game. The first quarter the Spartans had a rough time getting points on the board and the score of the first quarter winding up to be the Bulldogs 11 and the Spartans 6.
The second quarter was a little better for the Spartans as far as getting the ball to the basket; they were able to score 16 points in the quarter; however, the Bulldogs were able to get 18 points on the board with their score at halftime being 22-29 in favor of the Bulldogs.
During the third period the Spartans were able to get more points on the board and were still doing well on defense; they were able to get 16 points on the board to the Bulldog’s 10. The third quarter ended with the Spartans only 1 point behind the Bulldogs, with a score of 38-39.
The next quarter was a fight to the death with the Spartans and the Bulldogs neck and neck. The Spartans were doing well on defense and offense, however, so were the Bulldogs. The Spartans scored 15 points to the Bulldog’s 16 points; the final score was 53-55 in favor of the Bulldogs. Junior Jacob Wang commented, “We played hard but it wasn’t quite enough to get the lead back late in the 4th.”
Junior Caleb Ploeger led the team with 17 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists and had 5 rebounds. Colter Peterson followed him with 11 points, 2 steals, 1 assist and 1 rebound. Riley O’Donnell had 3 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Konner Flint had 3 points, 1 assist, and 2 rebounds. Jayden Allen had 2 points, 1 assist, and 3 boards. Teight Madler had 7 points, and 1 rebound. Sean Shelhamer had 4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal. Jacob Wang had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Spartan Boys Basketball battle the Morning Stars

Last Friday the Baker Spartan Basketball team travelled to Lame Deer to take on the Morning Stars for the first conference game of the season. The Spartans took a bit to get going, trailing 8 to 22 in the first quarter, but battled back in the second to cut the lead to 27 to 35 going into half time. The Spartans came out with intensity and both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter. The 4th quarter the Spartans held Lame Deer to only scoring 11 points, the least of any quarter of the game, but the Morning Stars won the game with the final score of 63 to 57.
Stats for the game: Riley O’Donnell 13 points, 1 assist, 7 rebounds, 3 steals. Colter Peterson 10 points, 2 assists. Konner Flint 5 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal. Jayden Allen 2 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal. Caleb Ploeger 14 points, 3 assists, 9 rebounds, 2 steals. Teight Madler 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals. Sean Shelhamer 3 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal. Jacob Wang 2 points. Caleb Ploeger commented, “We are really starting to meld as a team and will continue to do so. Our next step is putting together a full game and I foresee that happening in the near future. We are working hard in practice and plan on meeting Colstrip head on and going home triumphant.”
Baker Boys Basketball vs Lodge Grass

On Dec. 15, the Spartans faced off against the Lodge Grass Indians. The game began intensely as each team battled throughout the first quarter and Baker emerged with a slim lead. The next quarter things started to fall apart for the Spartans as the Indians rallied and began a run that the Spartans were unable to stop.
By halftime Lodge Grass led the Spartans 34 – 26. Coming out from halftime, the Spartans struggled to keep up with the Indians, and the quarter ended 59 to 37 in favor of Lodge Grass. Things improved in the fourth quarter and the Spartans once again showed that they weren’t going to flat out give up. They managed to keep the Indians from scoring over twenty, although they were unable to come back enough to win the game; the game ended with a score of 76-50 in favor of the Lodge Grass Indians.
Riley O’Donnell led the Spartans with 13 points, 2 assists, 5 rebounds. Caleb Ploeger followed with 9 points, 1 assist, 5 rebounds, 2 steals. Colter Peterson had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals. Konner Flint had 2 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds. Jayden Allen had 2 points, 4 assists, 1 rebound. Riley Schultz had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals. Teight Madler had 7 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Sean Shelhamer had 3 points, 1 block, 2 rebounds. Jacob Wang had 4 points, 4 rebounds. Jayden Allen commented, “The game was a tough loss for the team, but it was a great learning experience as well. As a team we are all working hard and becoming better each day. You can expect the Spartans to come back with lots of intensity for our next game at the end of the week.
