On Dec. 7 the Baker Spartan boys basketball team played their season opener against the Glasgow Scotties. All three squads had the opportunity to play. First up was the C squad, who set the tone of the night by winning 36-29.
Next, the JV played and put up a good fight; however, despite the effort, lost 52-31.
Next was varsity. Tip off was set to start at 5:30 p.m.. With twenty minutes to go before the game, the Baker Spartans went through their warm-up routine ready to face their opponents in battle. Senior managers Hannah Gonsioroski and Maleah Graham were preparing to fill out the book and take stats for the team while the BHS pep band was playing, allowing the players to zone into the game and forget the crowd around them. This must have worked, because from the get-go, the Spartans’ chemistry together was phenomenal.
Junior Caleb Ploeger made certain to watch the court, and was feeding the posts and passing when he knew another player was open, which was why he led the team in assists with 7 total.
Senior Sean Shelhamer was also playing well, contributing a team high of 7 rebounds to the game. Another senior, Colter Peterson, led in scoring for the Spartans, giving 15 points of the 49. This exciting game was entertaining for all to watch and the fans showed their appreciation for this excellent effort by the Spartans.
