Rodnie Schmidt, 77, Minot and longtime owner and operator of the Lamplighter Lounge and Bottle Shop died on Oct. 28, 2018 in a Minot hospital from injuries sustained in a vehicle – pedestrian accident.
On Feb. 9, 1941, Rodnie Dean Schmidt was the third born of four children to Adolph and Hazel Schmidt. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt raised their family on a farm south of Sawyer, N.D. When Rodnie was a teenager, the family moved to Minot where he attended Model High School and graduated in 1959.
Rodnie met his wife Billie Gail Fulton as a teenager and they later wed on Oct. 13, 1961. The couple was blessed with six children: Kevin, Kenton, Lori, Kurt, Jason and Jonathan. Billie was a homemaker and Rodnie was an entrepreneur. His earliest business venture was owning and operating North Hill Texaco a full-service gas station. He was the owner, mechanic and gas attendant.
Rodnie was a real go-getter as an entrepreneur and became involved with Magic City Garage Door and the Lamplighter Lounge in the 1970’s. In the early 1980’s, Rodnie devoted himself to being the owner/operator of the Lamplighter Lounge. He continued in this role for over 40 years. Managing the Lamplighter was a difficult task after Rodnie was diagnosed with dementia. It was almost as if the light of his life went out. The Schmidt children and Rodnie have continued this business legacy through flood and fire.
Rodnie had a strong work ethic, which made him a successful businessman. Through this journey he enjoyed visiting with customers and giving them a “hard time.” He was sure to check up on everyone with his famous line, “Are you taking a break?” Unmatched in his generosity, Rodnie gave to those in need and rarely turned down an unfortunate soul. Rodnie’s children and grandchildren were his number one fans and will forever miss having a warm meal around his table, a trip to the Dairy Queen, and a good conversation with him.
Rodnie was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie and Elks Lodge.
