The fifth and sixth grade classes, along with the help of Mrs. Spencer, have been learning about the five themes of geography. These themes are Movement, Region, Human Interaction, Environmental Interaction, Location, and Place, better known by the acronym MR HELP. After learning about these themes, each student was required to make a Power Point to describe each theme in their own way. Movement is the spreading of ideas and goods as well as the flow of people. Region is separated by formal, function, and vernacular; these can be described as city, county, state, voting region, and continent. The Region of Plevna is Plevna, Fallon County, Montana, Republican, and North America.
The Dependent Human Interaction of Plevna is farming and ranching. The Adaptive Human Interaction is checking the weather and planning your day accordingly, while the Modified Human Interaction is updating the technology we have in the area. Human Interaction and Environmental Interaction are very similar, but instead of looking at the effects on people, Environmental Interaction looks at the effects on the environment. On what does the environment depend? How does it adapt to changes? Finally, what modifications are made due to these changes?
We determine Location by Absolute Location, used by military, and the Relative Location, used by civilians. The Absolute Location of Plevna is 46° N (latitude) and 104° W (longitude), and the Relative Location is West of Baker and East of Miles City. Place is broken down into two parts, Physical Place and Human Place. Physical Places are features such as creeks, rivers, lakes, hills, mountains, and buttes, while Human Places are churches, homes, and other man-made structures. Some examples of Physical Places in the Plevna area would be Milk Creek, Sandstone Creek, and Pine Creek. Some Human Places in Plevna include the elevator, the railroad, the town churches, the community center, the post office, and the school.
