On Nov. 13, the Plevna Music Program under the direction of Mrs. Wagnon, took the opportunity to honor our country’s Veterans of the Armed Forces. Each grade in the school helped with a particular part of the program, some with presentation of colors, gifts of flags and poppies, proper folding of the flag, readings and poetic presentations, as well as several musical medleys.
Mrs. Walker opened the program with a welcome to all the Veterans, followed by Jessica Paul and Taylor Rieger, with the assistance of Mr. Wagnon, Presenting the Colors. The First Grade Class recited the Pledge of Allegiance and then sang You’re a Grand Old Flag, after which the school band played The Star Spangled Banner.
Jenna Paul read Flanders Field and then explained the story of the poppy. After the reading, the Kindergarten Class presented each Veteran with a poppy. Next Mr. Sawers explained what Veterans’ Day is and read the Presidential Proclamation. He shared the history of Veterans Day through the years, and then closed with an inspiring story from a Veteran. The Second Grade Class then presented small flags to the Veterans at this time. The Fifth Grade Class then demonstrated the proper way to fold our American flag, as each took a turn explaining the significance of every fold.
The choir honored the Federal Branches of the Armed Services with a Veterans Medley, encouraging each branch of the military to stand as their theme song was presented. Pastor McLachlan voiced a prayer for peace, which was followed by Mrs. Wagnon singing God Bless America with the audience joining in on the chorus.
Mrs. Walker closed the program inviting all Veterans to stay for lunch. The Third Grade Class escorted the Veterans to the cafeteria as they toured the beautiful bulletin boards that the students and teachers created for the Veterans with messages of thank you as well as hand prints positioned into the shape of the American flag. The 4th Grade Class made placemats for all the Veterans that joined them for lunch. Thank you Veterans for spending your morning with us, and thank you for sacrificing and serving our country so we can stand upright, be proud of our country, and be free!
