Early Thursday morning, Dec. 1, Mrs. Benner, Advisor, and the Plevna FCCLA Chapter consisting of Jessica Paul, Jenna Paul, Sophia Dulin, Trinity Rieger, Dacy Buerkle, Ashley Sander and Lexie Wills, boarded the Baker cruiser for District V, FCCLA convention at the Sidney fairgrounds.

The day began with an ice breaker hosted by the Wibaux Chapter in which they became acquainted with each other. The Dawson County Extension Agent, Bruce Smith, gave an interesting talk on the Farm to Table Program that is becoming more popular across our state. According to Mr. Smith, today’s generation of children will not live as long as their parents due to the rise in diabetes and obesity. He also gave them information on commercial kitchens for use in Dawson County, and the new Made in Montana logo’s that are being used for products/produce grown/made in Montana. Mr. Smith discussed the gap between what farmers get paid (10%-20%) and what corporations receive (80%-90%). With this information, the group realized that even though the price of beef or wheat is low, the corporations’ profits are quite large. An interesting fact was that Mr. Smith’s first job was with the Green Giant Corporation, and he was the Jolly Green Giant!

They FCCLA members then had a chapter planning meeting and watched a short power point on the National Convention in San Diego last summer. After that, district officer interviews were held, followed by the announcement and installation of new district officers. The new president is Dakota Reis from Jordan, and the recreational leader is Kristen Johnson of Wibaux. These ladies will represent District V and keep the local FCCLA Chapters informed of the new rules that are being implemented in FCCLA. The Plevna FFCLA Chapter is looking forward to the State Convention to be held in March.
