Spartans stay unbeaten

   The Baker Spartans traveled to Shepherd to play the Mustangs on October 16 and came out with the victory.

   Starting the first quarter, the Spartans began their time-consuming drive. Nearing the middle of the first, Luke Gonsioroski ran for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 6-0 early. On the following kickoff, Nic Bohle recovered the fumbled kick to give the ball back to the Spartans.

   Starting the second quarter, Luke Gonsioroski ran 34 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 12-0. Following that touchdown, Shepherd drove down the field and scored to make the score 12-8. Defense was very strong during the second quarter as Joe Fisher was able to intercept the Mustangs and give the Spartans the ball back. With the end of the quarter drawing close, Luke Gonsioroski scored on a 1-yard touchdown to make the lead 18-8 going into halftime.

   On the opening second half kickoff, Jordan Baxter recovered the kick to give the Spartans the ball early. Baker then drove down the field and Luke Gonsioroski ran for another 1-yard touchdown. Luke also added the 2-point conversion to make the score 26-8. Shepherd fired right back with a touchdown to attack the lead making the score 26-14, but that didn’t slow the Spartans down as Joe Fisher ran for a 6-yard touchdown. Luke Gonsioroski added the 2-point conversion making it 34-14.

   Opening the fourth quarter, Shepherd scored on a rushing touchdown. Kadon Gentilini intercepted the 2-point conversion attempt to make the score 34-20. Defense stood strong again as Joe Fisher intercepted another ball to give it back to the Spartans in the middle of the fourth. Luke Gonsioroski then ran for a 20-yard touchdown to make the margin bigger with a 40-20 margin. Shepherd added another touchdown in the middle of the fourth to make it 40-26. Toward the end of the game Luke Gonsioroski added the finishing punch with a 7-yard touchdown run and the 2-point conversion to make it a 48-26 conference win.

   Offensively: Luke Gonsioroski rushed 27-230 yards, 6 touchdowns; Joe Fisher 31-214 yards, 1 touchdown. Team rushing was 58-444 yards, passing 1-11, and 28 yards to Joe Fisher.

   Defensively: Andrew Craft 12 tackles, Matt Packer 11 tackles; Fumble recoveries: Nic Bohle and Jordan Baxter both with 1; Interceptions: Joe Fisher 2, Kadon Gentilini 1.

   The Baker Spartans host the Colstrip Colts this Friday, Oct. 23 at  7 p.m.
