A Schweigert family reunion was held in Billings at the Hilton Garden Inn July 24-25, 2015.
Submitted by Paulette Ellis
The last reunion was held in Twin Falls, ID in 2004 and in Baker in 1981 previous to that. This year’s event was hosted by Gloria Kusler-Follmer of Billings and Paulette Pfeifle-Ellis of Twin Falls, ID.
Daniel and Elizabeth (Huber) Schweigert had a family of 14 children: daughters Maggie (Fred Salzer), Martha (Willie Eszlinger), Jenny (Ted Kusler), Esther (Ted Pfeifle), Susie (Albert Pfeifle), Ruth (Jake Fuehrer), Bertha (Fred Brockel); and sons: Jake (Martha), Christ (Lena), George (Lydia), Edwin (Lenore), Andy (Bertha), Wilbert (Anna Mae), and Elmer “Buddy” (Julie), all deceased.
Ninety-six second, third, fourth, and fifth generation descendants were represented from nine states: WY, MT, ID, AZ, NE, NV, OR, ND and SD.
The evening of July 24 was “Meet and Greet” registration with goody bags provided by the Billings Chamber of Commerce. Playing cards and calendars were given to each family with Schweigert Family, Est 1861, embossed on them. Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks were served. Red/white/blue was the color theme for the weekend.
Family and friends had a wonderful time renewing acquaintances, making new ones, and reminiscing about earlier times. We introduced our children and grandchildren to members they had never met before. Some folks had not seen each other in over 50 years! It was expressed by many how blessed we feel to be a member of this family.
The morning of July 25 we enjoyed a full breakfast buffet brunch.
A silent auction was set up in the lobby whereby various family members donated items.
Memorabilia tables were filled with mementos from our past. Grandma Elizabeth’s German Bible was brought from Baker by Delbert and Alice Kay. Great-grandparents Christian and Karoline’s naturalization documents from 1914 when they renounced Russian citizenship to become U.S. citizens were on display as well as Elizabeth and Daniel’s marriage certificate from 1904. A family photo album given to Gloria Kusler-Follmer by cousin Larry Schweigert held precious memories.
That afternoon everyone was on their own.
Saturday night the banquet was a feast of prime rib, roast turkey, and all the trimmings.
Duane Brockel gave the gracious welcome and delivered family prayers at meals. He especially thanked Gloria and Paulette on behalf of the family for their hard work in putting together this successful reunion.
Paulette read segments of a poem previously read by deceased cousin Joyce Kost in 1981 followed by a showing of the DVD film, “Schweigert Family History 1861-2004”. Many people were deeply touched by the film’s history and sentimental journey it took us on once again.
Thank yous and farewells were said, and some tears were shed – until we meet again!
