Fair rodeo will have a whole new look

When fans come to see the rodeo this year many will wonder if they are seeing things right – the arena will be different.

After decades of use, the old arena was becoming outdated and wasn’t safe for rodeo stock or contestants. Many contestants didn’t want to compete in Baker because of the conditions.

The Fair Board listened to numerous comments on needed improvements and consulted the stock contractor prior to construction. The most drastic changes to the new arena included moving the announcer’s stand farther back for a better view of the bucking chutes. Timed events moved to the south end. More pens were added in the back; new sand for the arena surfacing; and overall, the arena extended and made wider.

“We tried to make it bigger and better for all events,” said Fair Board member Jerrid Geving.

Crews have been working steadily over the summer to ensure the arena would be complete and ready for the fair. The new arena will improve rodeo performances and competitors will find it more user friendly.

PRCA Rodeos will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Fallon County Fair.
