Savannah Hickey of Baker was the reigning Junior (age 13-16) champion at the 23rd Annual Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match held at the Lee Ranch north of Forsyth June 14-15. Hickey held on to her title from the 2013 match to become junior champion two years in a row.

The event, sponsored by the Forsyth Rifle and Pistol Club, had 602 shooters from 36 states and three foreign countries. Eight shots were taken at each of six targets from 350 to 805 yards for a possible 48 hits. Gusting winds made shooting conditions less than ideal both days of the competition.

Hickey used an 1885 Hi Wall chambered rifle in 40-65 which was custom made by C. Sharps Arms, Inc. in Big Timber. Her dad, Brian, spotted and called sight adjustments for windage and elevation. She received her second straight 8 pin at the 600 yard target for hitting it every time.

Hickey’s scores were 5/8 at 805 yards – buffalo, 8/8 at 605 yards – octagon, 6/8 at 530 yards – postage stamp, 5/8 at 408 yards – diamond, 7/8 at 517 yards – rectangle, 3/8 at 350 yards – offhand bucket, total hits 34/48.
